I requested this book as I thought it was a mystery. But it turned out to be a love story with a mystery attached. I might have stopped reading it as I'm not really into books which are primary love stories. But that didn't happen. As a matter of fact, I had trouble putting this book down. And I found myself turning to this book and ignoring others I had open.

The author has to ability to make the characters in the book seem like real people, and not just characters in a book. Despite my best intentions, I found myself getting personally involved in their lives. Especially for the main character, a 30-ish, single, woman lawyer living in post World War I Britain, where she continually confronts a male-dominated world.

As I neared the end of the book I began to feel that things weren't going to turn out well for her. And that upset me. Well, I was partially correct, not everything ended up as well as she would have liked. However, the ending was somewhat satisfying, although there were issues which were not wrapped up. And, looking at the author's other books, I discovered a sequel which I will try and obtain. So..... if you don't really need a "they lived happily ever after" ending, I highly recommend this book.
