This is not a book that cant be put down and returned to later. That does not mean it is not better-written and funnier than some novels Ive read straight through. And every time the authors boss goes overboard and I feel righteously angry on behalf of the author, I realize that he had his revenge by recording his bosss nutty behavior in his books. First in a series; sequels include All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing.

James Herriot's love for animals shines through in these feel good stories of his life as a country vet in England. From taking care of kittens and puppies all the way up through large farm animals, Mr. Herriot always has an interesting anecdote and lesson it impart. His entire series are a pleasure to read.

I really liked this memoir of being an English countryside vet in the late 1930s. The book, though it did follow a loose chronology, seemed more like a series of articles or anecdotes than a cohesive novel. Some chapters did flow together, but the vast majority did not. That's not to say that I didn't like the book, because I did, I loved it - it had many parts that were laugh-out-loud funny - the brother, Tristan, was an especially comical character. The memoir was educational too, but the veterinary technicalities were well explained. It actually had less to do with animals than I thought it would - there was a great deal about people - even a central romance!

I loved it when I read it many years ago - my daughter "had" to read it for school and didn't like it.

A wonderful book, with funny stories, heartwrenching stories, stories to make you think. But above all, a story about love of profession, land, and people. Love this book!

I bought this book to give to a friend and decided to reread my own copy. I like fact that although there is an overall story of the book, each chapter usually contains a story of its own that begins and concludes within that chapter. This book and its sequels are not for the faint-hearted relating to medical procedures with animals, but they are well-written, educational, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended.
