On the one hand, I couldn't put this book down and couldn't stop comparing Louise's mother to my 1st generation German-American grandmother, who went through almost the exact same process of wanting to be American-American. The author writes well and I enjoyed the way she told things.
On the other hand, the story was dark and often depressing, angry throughout, had too much sex for my tastes, was filled with swear-words, and did not really have a happy ending. It did not make me want to pick up any other book by this author, or ever re-read this one.

The descriptions of her family's meals - both good and horrendous - were both detailed and funny. The relationships between family members were painful though partially familiar.
