On the one hand, I couldn't put this book down and couldn't stop comparing Louise's mother to my 1st generation German-American grandmother, who went through almost the exact same process of wanting to be American-American. The author writes well and I enjoyed the way she told things.
On the other hand, the story was dark and often depressing, angry throughout, had too much sex for my tastes, was filled with swear-words, and did not really have a happy ending. It did not make me want to pick up any other book by this author, or ever re-read this one.

I admit I was expecting something like I Love You Like a Tomato. That is part of my disappointment. But I just don't like reading so much anger and bitterness, and that is what at least 2 thirds of this book was about. Overbearing. Did get better nearing the end. I won't read anything else by this author. I lent this book out, and the reader said, "Is it me? The whole thing is so angry..."
