This novel is a oompanion piece to Balzac's novel "Cousin Bette>" In the latter novel we see a downtrodden woman get revenge against those w2ho have done her wrong. By the end of the book they have all come to a bad end. In the former novel we see the opposite happen. Cousin Pons is a good kind man whose life is destroyed by those surround him. "Cousin Bette" has been made into a movie several times and is one of Balzac's best none work. Neither of these books is a "feel good" work, but they are interesting nevertheless.
