The Courtesan by Alexandra Curry imagines the life of Sai Jinhua, a nineteenth century Chinese courtesan (prostitute). It is more fiction than history. It is tragic and disturbing and includes graphic descriptions of violence against women. Do I like it for the historical context or dislike it for the descriptions? I am still undecided, but the book does keep me reading. For that, I look forward to Alexandra Curry's next book.
