This unpreposing book with black and white pictures and large amounts of text is one of the most interesting trail books I have seen for the mid-atlantic region. The trail descriptions are incidental compared to the detailed and fascinating history of the origins of the parks. Highly recommend that you read the whole book front to back, not just skip around to a few parks near you like a usual reference book. There are detailed essays on bird watching and tree identification, as well. Great gem - well deserved of its revision/reissue history. Most books are now becoming outdated with the introduction of online trail maps, but this one should have a place of distinction based on the immense sense of place imparted by the descriptions. Few images, this is a book for readers before you hit the trail, not a turn by turn travel guide.
