On the face of it, this is your classic superhero story. The twist is the protagonist is too cultured to give the superhero subculture a fair shake.

The end result is a critic's look at the inside processes of becoming a superhero. This is not a happy story, but neither is it unhappy. This is "superhero realism" in the vein of "Kickass" with the addition of some superpowers.

If you like your superheroes to be clean cut and above reproach, this is not your novel. If you like your superheroes to deal with mundane problems and generally act like humans in addition to fighting crime, this is probably your novel.
