One of Barnard's many hilarious satires; this one skewers the British upper classes and their stately ancestral halls. If you like your mysteries witty rather than witless and you don't know Robert Barnard, you are missing out!

The last word of the title is Cage. Perce Spender inherits a castle, is transformed from the prince of his local pub to the 12 Earl of Ellesmere. Perce plans to sell, but someone sinister among his shady offspring and larcenous friends would relish living like a Lord. Sudden death was coming to Spender's ancestral home. Robert Bernard is a wonderful mystery writer and transforms you right into the world he's describing.
