Zoe Oldenbourg is probably my favorite historical fiction author. She tells a medieval tale without prettying it up like so many modern writers do. She tells her story with all of the love, violence, and bleak existence of the medieval age. The characters in her books are not the famous people we've all heard about; her novels are about the minor nobility and peasants as they go about their daily lives. The details and historic accuracy make this and her other novels fascinating.
