I've been a fan of Michael Perry since he wrote Population 485.He has a different style of writing that doesn't always appeal to everyone but if you are from a small town anywhere in the Midwest then i think you will really love his writing! Coop- picks up where his last book Truck: A Love Story left off. He writes about his wife, the birth of his first baby at HOME,and his love for his stepdaughter. He makes plans in this book to fill his farm with animals. First on the list is chickens but he struggles to come up with the best option for a chicken coop so the pigs arrive first. He goes back to his childhood telling hilarious tales of growing up on a farm, his parents love and dedication to raising foster children,most of them being handicapped and marvels at how they managed to feed all those kids and pay the bills. Some of his childhood tales remind me alot of my childhood days growing up in small town Wisconsin,which is why i think i like his books so much!He touches a little apon religion and how he was raised in a not so traditional type of religion. He grew up poor but never felt poor and it sounds like his parents were really good, hardworking,kindhearted people.
There are moments in this book that will have you laughing out loud, but also some very sad moments that will have you reaching for the kleenex.

Many memoirist have a hard time pulling off the self-depreciating humor angle, Perry is definitely a writer that stands out from the rest. He uses his humble beginnings and his misadventures in farming and family to bring the reader into his world. With just the right amount of wit, you see Michael Perry for the kind and considerate father and man that make this world a better place.
In Coop, Michael and his wife share a one-year adventure on 35plus acres of land, with the combining of family, farm and a new child on the way life just is not the simple journey that he remembers with parents that made due in rather unique ways and friends that come to the rescue with inventive solutions to the daily traumas that farm life brings.
If you are looking for a true "farming" book, this is not it, but if you are looking for laugh out loud moments on a farm with a clueless farmer and his flock of family and friends than I highly recommends this book. However, do note that there are gut wrenching moments that will bring tears to your eyes and that will take the reader on a full circle of human emotions.
