If you enjoy historical novels, this may be a book to put on your reading list. While I didn't particularly care a great deal about the characters in the novel, I did love reading about 19th century Puerto Rico. I knew very little about its beginnings and its ties to the slave trade and this book was an education in that respect. If you need characters to root for then this isn't the book for you. The author doesn't give them many redeeming qualities. But overall, for the background information, a worthwhile read.
