Having read May's other books (Pliocene Era saga), I was expecting an epic story. And, I'm happy to report that I was not disappointed. A fun, well-thought-out world, complex characters, and a story that draws you in but surprises you at times.

This series is more Fantasy (Pliocene Era was more sci-fi), but there is quite a bit of overlap in these genres. She starts out talking about a character, then the book is really the story of how he got there, so you know a little of the end story, but no more than you would expect if you thought about the story anyway.

I would definitely recommend the book to others. If you liked May's likable and unlikable characters from her other books, you'll find plenty of the same here. Some characters you are supposed to dislike, and as they succeed and fail you definitely get into the story more.
