THE CONFESSOR by Daniel Silva: If you think Italians have a long memory, you should spend some time in the Middle East. We're the ones who invented the vendetta, not the Sicilians." Gabriel Allon, art restorer and Mossad hit man, is once again reluctantly dragged from his day job by Israeli spymaster Ari Shamron. This time, it's a revenge mission. An academic working on an expose about the Vatican's collaboration with the Nazis has been assassinated by a secret Vatican society known as Crux Vera. Crux Vera intends to kill the latest pope to keep him from exposing the Vatican's secret archives. Gabriel must take up his slain colleague's research, something the Italian and German governments assuredly do not want him to do. The series just gets better and better.

This is a Gabriel Allon novel. He is a Jewish Mossad agent and art restorer who lives in Italy. There are repeat characters who we are happy to see and some who we know will create havoc and death. Very intriguing and well written. This story takes Gabriel right to the Pope who also wants to uncover the truth about the church's response to the Holocaust...while a powerful cardinal plots against Gabriel and the Pope. I highly recommend this book.
