Even though the narratives by Ames are very self-serving, it's pretty easy to see behind the facade. The rest of the book is well-researched and evenhanded.

The true story of one of the first CIA agents turned spy for Russia before Robert Hanssen. A great book for CIA-plot line buffs, it goes into detail of how CIA agents recruit other spys, and how a man, who has sworn to protect and serve the country turns against it. Very interesting read.
Slow beginning but picks up.
