Fragile, gentile old Miss Emily Benton was the last person on earth anyone would ever suspect of wrongdoing. She had graciously allowed Agnes Blakston and her servant Mattie to occupy the Benton family Nome for the summer rent-free But the women soon found that something was wrong-- horribly wrong.

There were midnight phone calls-- but no one was ever on the line. There were footprints in the garden and other evidence of a nocturnal invader--but no one was ever there. And there was the incredible document found hidden in the house: Miss Emily's confession to murder! Night by agonizing might, the terror mounted--and what was to have been drean vacation became a nightmare of fear that could end in only one way: death!
