It was likely that I'd been given my predecessor's room and that it was here she had planned her flight into the arms of her mysterious lover.&r...  more »

A well-written, 19th century mystery in the manner of Anne Perry: suspenseful and conscious of 19th century sensibilities. Also, another delightfully strong female main character.

Set in 1864, this Victorian mystery follows a young woman's adventures when she takes the position of paid companion and discovers that her predecessor has disappeared. With the aid of a young Scotland Yard detective who seems very familiar to her, she finds a deeper and darker mystery waiting to be solved.

This book and Ann Granger's book, a Rare Interest in Corpses, are the same book--different titles. It is the first in her series set in 1860's that features Lizzie Martin and detective Ben Ross. Lizzie is an independent lady who is the daughter of a doctor who worked in a coal mining community and Ross grew up in that community and was helped by her father to avoid going into the mines as a child. It is the beginning of another great Ann Granger series.

This was a nicely written Victorian mystery. I enjoy Ann Granger's writing style, she does a good job of evoking the atmosphere of Victorian London. I also liked the variety of characters from different classes of society. It's the first in a series featuring a very appealing heroine and hero, who have not really started a romantic relationship yet, but something is definitely in the air between them, and I'm sure it will be developed in the books following this one. Some of the coincidences that take place are pretty unlikely, but the villain was a surprise to me.
