This was an enjoyable historical mystery set in 1860s San Francisco. The main characters are nurse Celia Davies and Civil War veteran policeman Nick Greaves. I really enjoyed the early San Francisco setting.

In her work, Celia had befriended a reformed Chinese prostitute named Li Sha whose corpse is discovered floating in San Francisco Bay. Celia has an interesting family (including a mysteriously missing husband), an amusing Scottish housekeeper and a half-Chinese cousin who lives with her.. There are some romantic sparks between policeman Greaves and Celia, which can't be resolved until the question of Celia's husband's fate is resolved. The plot line was very interesting and I wasn't able to guess who Li Sha's killer was. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in this series!
