I started this book when my husband saw it in a store and thought I'd like it. Wow, was he right! I started it, then read whenever I could. It was an easy read, by by no means a boring one. The plot was gripping, and I found myself saying "Just one more page," or "one more chapter," only to find that I couldn't put it down at all. It was a continual cliff hanger. I'll definitely look for more of Mr. Prescott's books!!

As mentioned in the book's description, Erica and Robert are the only survivors at the scene of crime. Decades later Erica's become a well known and liked antique dealer in her hometown, inherited a huge heritage after her mother was shot.
Her brother Robert's become a weird loner in the woods. He´s only seen once a months for groceries in town.
When young Sherry Wilcott is found dead with a cut throat everybody suspect the loner Robert. Erica vanishes in the woods while searching for her brother. She gets captured by Sherry Willcott's murderer. Strapped down in a cave begins her fight for life.
The burnt out town sheriff, Ben Connor, fears for her life and their love while trying to figure out which part of Erica's disappearance her con-artist husband Andrew and her brother are playing.
When Erica's car is found, an officer is shot in the wood, the plot spins and turns. The reader learns pretty early who's the beast in the woods.
The novel offers a lot of secrets, goes back into the past of two scared children and unravels another gruesome crime.

This is not for the faint of heart but it's one of Michael Prescott's very best books.

I found this to be very slow and just when I thought it was getting better it just got boring.
good thriller
This was the first time reading this author. I had heard great things about him but found this book a little confusing and therefore was very bored with the first half. It got better as I read it and I will try another one of his in the future.
This book is awesome. It's fast paced, fraught with plot twists, and just an all around captivating read. I loved it, and read it over and over again!
A thriller! Twists and turns. Should have been made into a movie.
Excellent read! I found it very hard to put down.
Though not as good as other Prescott stories, a fine thriller nonetheless.
hold on to your seat you wont be able to put this one down.
Excellent book! Real fast paced.
Very intense!!

Long time ago, two children watch as mommy is blown away by her lover. Then he is killed too. The mystery is solved only when the children who inherited money, start seeing murders reoccur in their small town. The new sheriff must find out who is at the bottom of this.
The past comes back to haunt the residents of Barrow, Pa., when their normally sleepy town is rocked by the discovery of a local girl's remains washed up on the riverbank. Not since the double murder at the Garrison mansion decades earlier has anything so tragic occurred there. Robert and Erica, the two siblings orphaned that violent night so long ago, find themselves again caught up in the terror. Erica, now married and a successful art dealer, is missing, and the new police chief, Connor, with whom she has been having an affair, fears the worst. Although Connor, as well as the rest of the town, assumes the murderer is Robert?known to the locals as "the fool on the hill" because of his irrational rantings and reclusive lifestyle?no one has been able to prove it. Afraid Erica may have set out to find the truth on her own, Connor makes her case top priority, but time is running out. Prescott effectively captures the pain experienced by his characters and how it leads them to terrifying acts of desperation.
