Haggard also wrote about agricultural and social reform, in part inspired by his experiences in Africa, but also based on what he saw in Europe. His writings are sympathetic to the natives. He often portrayed Africans as heroic in his stories even though the main characters are usually European. Haggard created the Allan Quatermain adventures. Colonel Quaritch was published in 1888. It is a story different from a lot of Haggard's works. The Colonial is an English gentleman encompassing all the qualities of dignity and reserve associated with a gentleman. The story has many amusing scenes with the shooting match being one of the best parts of the book.« less
