I love Nora Robert's books and read every one. I like the stand alone ones better than the series books.
I was slightly disappointed with this one, it's a little slow, but I loved the hunky, sexy artist, Aston Archer. Eventually the book moved at a better pace and I ended up totally enjoying it.

Lila, Ash, Julie, and Luke make up our cast of heroine, hero, BFF, and best buddy. I want Lila's job - especially if dogs like Earl Grey pop up in the nick of time to charm a ditzy socialite and foil a kidnapping attempt. However, Lila is handy to have around. I wanna meet the person who can diassemble a LoJack, tackle a faux paint job, and still spend only 2-3 hours a day writing a novel.

This book really renews my faith in Nora Robert's writing and at least this editing staff! The story line flows at her usual style. The dialogue fits with the upper crust New Yorkers that populate this book. I appreciate a likable art gallery manager, and her sinfully decadent bakery owner. I like Ash and his wonderfully confusing clan of step's and half siblings and assorted relative from his parents' marriages. We only get to meet a few of them, but s few of them seem interesting enough for their own (short?) stories.

Lila Emerson is a professional house-sitter. She takes care of her client's Manhattan apartments when they are out of town. It also gives her time to work on writing her young adult novels. While watching an apartment for a new client, Lila is gazing at the neighbors in the next building when she witnesses a woman being pushed out of a window. The cops believe it was a murder-suicide as the woman's boyfriend was found shot in the apartment. At the police station the next day to give her statement, Lila meets artist Ashton Archer, the brother of the victim's boyfriend. He knows his brother would never harm a woman and insists that this was a double-murder. Lila listens to him and agrees to help him sort out what really happened.

Lila and Ash work together to discover what exactly his brother was into. I liked both of these characters and thought the romance was convincing. A romance between secondary characters just added to the story. The suspense story involves the missing Imperial Fabergé Eggs and someone who will go to great lengths to possess them. The suspense was amplified when Lila becomes the target of the killer.

This was a long story, but I was hooked right from the start. I listened to the audio version which was narrated by Julia Whelan. The narration was outstanding and gave me a good reading experience. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

At first I really didn't want to like this book as it was darker than books I like to read for pleasure, but when Nora starts spinning a tale, there's just no doubt that there's magic in her pen. She has a talent that just goes beyond boundaries to me. Even if you hate some of the things in the story, she is just so good at what she does that she has you hooked to where you don't want to close the covers of her books, ever.. This one is no exception!
