What a great book to read since I don't typically read murder/mystery books. The twists and turns in this book kept me wanting to read it constantly - of course I couldn't put it down the closer to the end that I got. Great book!

Initially I was skeptical of this book because most of the reviews quoted were from romance reviewers. However, since PBS thiller readers seem to like her I thought I'd give this book a try.
I am not sure why this book is marketed as a romantic thriller, because there is no more romance than in your average Sanford Prey novel, which is to say not much. Instead this is an enjoyable, though fairly ordinary, suspense/thriller novel. Would make a good beach or airplane read since it could be finished in a long day.

This is the first book I've read by this author. I will definitely read more. Very talented writer. This is the first in a series of 4 books. I am waiting on the other 3!!! Keeps you going until the end and a very good "who done it".

I recently discovered this author and have been reading everything of hers. This series I especially liked as it continues along the same story line w/the same characters. She does a great job of weaving it all together down to the last page of the last book in this series.

Excellent book by a new to me author. Kept me guessing right till the end and didn't have any boring parts at all. It is the first in the series, and I can't wait to read the others.

Great Book - I love this author
I've never read this author before, and I am now a BIG fan...this book was incredible. The suspense was edge of your seat...I don't think hollywood could ever justify this book by trying to make a movie from it...a movie would just take away...a must read!!
Great reading.
This was a great suspense story with a little romance. Cass Burke, a detective in a small idyllic town called Bowers Inlet must face an old trauma from her childhood. Her mother, father and sister were killed and she was the loan survivor of six years of age. Twenty-six years later, the killer returns to town to finish what he started.
I enjoyed this very much. I enjoy suspense. Some characters introduced in this book may appear in the next one entitled "Hard Truth."

This is the way a suspense/thriller/mystery should be written!
Sticks with the storyline, easy to read, doesn't have a lot of rubbish descriptions inserted as page fillers so makes for a 'just right' length of book.
Characters are easy to like, there is no 'romance' to this story (thank goodness!), just a very good suspense

If you love Mariah.. dont miss this one. One of her best.
a good read - first one I read in the series. I liked it enough to go looking for the other books in the series.
Pretty good police/serial killer mystery set at the Jersey shore.
Awesome read, keeps you guessing.
Suspenseful plot. Cassie Burke lost her family 26 years ago and nearly her own life. Now the killings have started again and Cassie needs FBI agent Rick Cisco to uncover the link.
Excellent book. Very good balance of characters, well written.
Great book, good to see previous characters as part of storyline!
A real gripper! Love Mariah Stewart. Think "Cold Case" but the detective on the case is the sole survivor of a serial killer 26 yrs before who has now surfaced. Hard to put down.
Although this series of books contain some romance, I would say mystery is parmount in the story.
An uncommonly crafty serial killer challenges two crime-fighting women with problematic pasts in the first of a new romantic suspense trilogy from RITA-nominee Stewart (Dead End). In a tantalizing prologue, Regan Landry, the daughter of a recently murdered famous true crime writer, discusses her father's files of unsolved cases in a TV interview, which inspires a globe-trotting mass murderer to return to the small Jersey shore town where his killing spree began. It's also home to police detective Cassandra Reilly, whose entire family was slaughtered 26 years beforeby a killer who'd been caught. Or had he? As the new body count climbs, Cassie and Regan, paired with two suitably strong yet sensitive FBI agents, gradually unravel an obsession-rooted mystery spanning continents and decades, in which nearly everyone could be a suspect. As in most of Stewart's work, sex is minimal; emotional entanglements focus as strongly on family ties as romantic love. But the author's flair for complex characterization makes both of the book's professional-turned-personal relationships at least as intriguing and enjoyable as its subtle suspense.

EXCELLENT Book!
When Cass was only six, her entire family was massacred in their home. Cass had been left for dead, but amazingly survived. Craig Denver, a rookie, carried her out of that house. He became her mentor. That had been twenty-six years ago, almost to the day.
Now she is Detective Cassandra "Cass" Burke. She has been a copy with Bowers Inlet, New Jersey, for about ten years. Craig Denver is not the Chief of Police. It is still a small town on the shore and Cass is the only detective. She suddenly finds herself in a serial homicide investigation. The killer is sending Denver taunting notes, just as the Bayside Strangler did the former chief, twenty-odd years ago. But why would he kill so many and then disappear for so long before beginning anew? Or was it a copycat killer? There are four victims in only six days. Denver and Cass need help. John Mancini with the FBI sends Special Agent Rick Cisco to help Cass and Denver out.
Mancini also sends Special Agent Mitchell Peyton to the home of Regan Landry. Regan is a writer. Her father was famous for his true crime best sellers. many criminals wrote to him in hopes of being immortalized in one of his books. But he had been murdered eight months ago by Lowell (a killer in one of the "Dead" series). While going through her father's things, Regan locates files and notes about the Bayside Strangler. The killer had been in contact with Regan's father long ago. But the files and notes are scattered. With Peyton's help, perhaps they could find some clue to identify the killer currently in Bowers Inlet.
Time is running out. The population is about to triple due to summer renters. If the killer is not captured before then, the body count will sky rocket!

I have spent years reading all the old favorites, Sandford, Patterson, Kellerman, Coben, Connelly, etc. I had not read Mariah Stewart because I though she wrote "Romance" books and I like thrillers! Well let me say if you like suspense and thrillers you will love Mariah. There may be a slight romantic angle but they have far more suspense than my old favorites. Her books are great and I will be reading all of them I can find.
Good story - light reading. Keeps you engrossed trying to figure out how they're going to resolve it.
Exceptionally good!
From the front cover: She slipped through a killer's fingers. But evil just wouldn't let go.

In matters of crime, there are many versions of the truth. It was fast-paced & intricately plotted. Could not put the book down.
Twenty-six years ago, even before a series of brutal murders rocked the idyllic town of Bowers Inlet, Cassie Burke lost her parents, her sister, and nearly her own life to a transient befriended by her father. Back then, Cassie was a scared kid--now she's a homicide cop. Back then, the suspect was caught and convicted--he died in prison. But now the killing has started again. And all signs indicate that the Bayside Strangler has come back for more.
With too many victims and too few suspects, Cassie has her hands full investigating the case, while working through the old trauma it has brought to the surface. Luckily, FBI agent Rick Cisco is dispatched to lend support. Together, Cassie and Rick must uncover the link between the dark past and the dangerous present to bring this small town's long nightmare to an end. If they fail, an elusive fiend will slip back into the shadows...to watch and wait--and kill another day.
