The death of a young girl in a southern town unleashes supernatural forces bent on revenge. McDowell's career was woefully short (he died young) and this is one of his best spooky tales (I feel his best is The Elementals.) He evokes a brooding, unescapable terror and unlike in many similarly themed stories, the reader might feel that the victims of the haunting are getting just what they deserve.

McDowell can really bring on the chills. I love a good horror story but usually ghost stories don't do a whole lot to creep me out. This one did. Right from the beginning the chills and thrills start and are nonstop. Look forward to reading even more by this author.
