Very different book. Only 3 stars, but definitely worth the read writen as if the storyteller is a 12/13 year old girl in a small town.

I have never been a huge fan of Martha Grimes, but this book completely changed my mind. It is a moving novel, which has a mystery at its heart but is really about the choices we make and their consequences. Grimes has an incredible ability to bring her child narrator Emma to vivid, contradictory, loveable life, while at the same time showing the viewer glimpses of adult conflict that Emma is only just beginning to understand. A wonderful read.

Emma Graham is one smart 12-yr-old but she doesn't flaunt it. She gets herself plunk right in the middle of a criminal investigation in which she is the only person who is thinking about what really happened. Before the crime is solved two old murders have joined the melee and Emma becomes the heroine of the moment. This is one of Martha Grimes best novels IMHO, you'll read it again and again.

Humorous murder mystery narrated by a very spunky 12 year old girl. I found her quite amusing.

This was slow getting started, but once it did, it drew me in and kept me wanting to find out what happens next. She's a different sort of writer than I'm used to, but the change was appreciated. I like the way she shares the inner thoughts of the character telling the story. She portrays the 12-year old girl well.

I find her books hard to get into. My girlfriend loves her writing. Different strokes right?
