I want Vanak to write more books. I have not read something by her for over a year, and now I want more. This book continues the tales surrounding a bedouin tribe in Egypt. Vanak continues to throw great characters and their romances together. What I found most enjoyable about this book is that it showed the recovery from sexual abuse in what I took to be a very realistic way.

The chemistry between the two main characters was so palpable that I found myself panting. Vanak has skill, great great skill.

The one downside to this book: it was not long enough. It also fizzled out a little bit at the end, but not enough for me to care.

The Cobra is a blue eyed orphaned Brit adopted by a warrior tribe from the Egyptian desert. The concubine is a beauty sold into slavery as a child, and subjected to horrific treatment by a sadistic owner. They meet, they heal, they have adventures and a good amount of secrets. Bonnie Vanak is an author who strolls along in a story, filling in the background without much dialogue. Characters kind of reserved to my taste.

Badra was sold into slavery at age eleven, raped repeatedly by her captor until she was rescued by another tribe. Khepri, also known as Kenneth, the Duke of Caldwell, who was also rescued by this same tribe when his family was killed in the desert becomes her protector for five years. He has loved her all this time and when he is released from his vow to protect her wants to marry her. She is terrified of sex because of her past and refuses because she thinks she won't be able to love him like a wife. His English family finds out he is still alive and he returns to learn how to be the heir he was meant to be. They reunite in England when she is secretly selling treasures from an archeological dig to save her daughter from the her same fate. Khepri, aka Kenneth, finds out and again rescues her and her daughter where he teaches Badra the joys of sex and love.

Wow, a really good read. I think the author really took the time to study the cultures and human nature. Her characters were interesting and seemed real. I also thought the descriptions were just right in both wording and length (I dislike books that have 4 pages of descriptions and nothing else). The book was focused on the characters, which is the best read for me.

A lost heir, a tormented beauty, the sand, the fury, the Sahara, Egypt and London fan the flames of this novel.

A beautiful love story, December 4, 2005

A wonderful story that flowed from start to finish. Our hero Khepri is adopted by the khamsin when his parents are killed in Egypt.Badra the heroine is rescued from a sadistic sheik and given sanctuary by these warriors.Khepri is given the responsibility of protecting Badra but forbidden to touch her.He consequently falls in love with her and worships her from afar in true courtly love fashion for a time.Badra returns his love but is afraid to show this because of the horrors of her past.Khepri believing she doesn't love him returns to England vowing to forget her. They are reunited, and face obstacles to their love which they overcome.I enjoyed this book because the hero and heroine were sympathetic characters. The hero wasn't arrogant and overbearing which is a plus in my book as I get tired of reading about these types of men who ride roughshod over their heroine's feelings. After being rejected by Badra Khepri was hurt but he was still very protective of her,he did not seek to get any form of revenge on her, very chivalric like a knight of old.he's my favorite hero to date.Badra's story is sad and I'm glad the author did not have her getting over her traumatic experiences very quickly. There was a progression from her facing what happened to her, talking to khepri about it and being able to make love with Khepri-superbly done. This book is a sad love story but it's beautifully written. There are enough truly romantic moments in that it doesn't become morbid.I will be buying The Tiger and the Tomb and The Falcon and the Dove by the same author because of this book.
