Just re-read the book and found it just as entertaining as the first time.

One of the best books I have read in a long time. Kept me reading way into the night.
Lots of strange new concepts that I have not seen even hinted at before.

I've been trying navigate the urban fantasy current for a while, so it's been a relief to find a more traditional fantasy series to enjoy, one that is well written (optional for urban fantasy, apparently) and not in the 1st person! Anyway, this is an absorbing tale of young Raksura finding his way back to his people and so good that I stayed up way too late to finish it.

Moon has been alone for a long time, forced by the death of his family to try to hide with other races to survive. As a shiftling, one of his two forms is a flighted one that resembles the enemy Fell, so Moon is forced repeatedly out of towns/villages. Finally, he is discovered by a member of his own race and is invited to return to a Raksura colony, where this adventure begins.

Martha Wells does a wonderful job of creating appealing, believable characters in a plot that is straightforward yet compelling. I'm giving this book my best recommendation: I'll have to read it again.

Moon is a shape-shifter who has been living among the tribes of the earth. He knows he doesn't belong but he is lonely. All he knows is that he is different from the others but can't find anyone like him. When he is viewed shifting he is staked in a clearing where he is rescued by Stone, an older man of his kind. They are the Raksura - shape-shifters who live in colonies. Moon is recruited by Stone to come to his colony where he is challenged by many. He discovered that he is a consort, whatever that is.

Moon feels out of place in the colony, especially when he is challenged by some of the warriors, making him unsure whether or not he should stay. The queen, Pearl, is working with the fell, enemies of the Raksura. Her efforts are unsettling to Moon and many in the colony. And, when the fell capture most of the colony, they realize that their fears have been justified. Pearl approves a journey by Jade, a young queen, and Moon to find a poison that prevents fell from shifting into their flying forms. The two encounter and kill a ruler who is following them. They finally obtain the poison and the recipe for making it and join the others.

It's important to discover how the fell knows what is happening within the Raksura and how they can track others like Jade and Moon. Their discoveries lead to a final battle as the Raksura fight to retrieve the young of their colony and destroy the fell. It's a light fun read!
