I read this when I was a teenager and have yet to find a book with a heroine that I cared as much for. This is an AWESOME story. The author's follow up books weren't as good as this one. In fact, after book 2 (Valley of the horses), the rest of the series reads more like romance novels. I'll still devotedly continue to read them because I care so much about Ayla.

This is a epic you cant miss, even if it isn't in the genre that you normally read. This series is captivation-every last one in the series. Jean Auel's writting is so fluid, you forget your reading a book and are there. My favorite series! Don't miss this one.

I wasn't sure I would be into this genre of novel at first, but needing something to read, I tried it and found that I couldn't put it down! I found myself feeling like I was in the novel itself and I became so addicted and emotionaly involved, that I couldn't put it down. I finished it in two days! The author did an excelent job with making a connection with readers and the books characters. There arn't any dull moments in the novel, making it a very unique and page-turning story.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. The author has done an incredible amount of research into prehistoric times, and it shows. Warning: this book will catch your interest and never let you go, and once you read it, you'll want to read the whole series.

My mom tried to get me to read this book when I was in the 4th grade, but I wouldn't. She kept trying, but it wasn't until I stumbled on it at a used bookstore when in college that I started it. But once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I ran back to pick up the sequels before the bookstore closed, but other than that.. I didn't stop reading until I'd finished all 4 books (5 was not yet released at the time). Since then, I've reread this book at least once a year.

Jean M. Auel makes you feel like you are there, at the beginning of human history. Amazing!

This book was better than I expected. I went into it thinking how hard can life be as an early human. I mean, you find shelter, you hunt animals and gather plants for food and get water from a stream. Pretty simple right. Not! The author weaves a beautiful story dealing with all the emotions and challenges we still face today. The protagonist deals with being different and not fitting in. Her adoptive family deals with struggles of acceptance, love, understanding, respect, anger, frustration, etc. I loved the various characters. A great book.
I have read hundreds and hundreds of books over the years, yet I have not found a single heroine that I love and identify with more than Ayla. She is breathtakingly beautiful (though she doesn't know it), courageous, smart, and a woman way ahead of her time. I love that she tries to fit in with the clan, but constantly questions the rules and beliefs of the society that surround her. The accuracy and detail of the landscape and spiritual beliefs, bring this story to life. The reader feels as if they are immersed in a prehistoric world and a participant in the story, instead of a bystander. The Earth Children's series gets marks that are off the chart! Jean M. Auel is in a class entirely to herself. I have read this series probably 5 or 6 times over the years and each time I pick it up, its like reading it for the first time.

A masterfully written story.
When this book first came out, it was much sought-after. I loved it - it really stirs the imagination to think what it must have been like to live so long ago. This was the best of the series, in my opinion.
Loved the characters. I appreciated the detailed description of life and very creative and believable description of human evolution.

this is the first in the Earth's children series and I truly liked this story of the girl with the tall, blond girl left alone by a natural disaster being adopted by the Clan who were far different. A very good story.

Vast epic novel of the beginning of humanity. Could all of that progress really be compressed into the life of one mere woman -- Ayla? Although it stretches credibility, it's a well-told tale, and the beginning of a strong series.
This was an awesome series!
The best in the series. Excellent premise, riveting characters, compelling story. Book 2 is good also. The other books are long-winded.
