I read this book out of curiosity. I am not a fan of Ann Rice, but after hearing about this trilogy of hers for so long I wanted to know what the fuss was about. I think it is very over rated.
This is not a fiction book, it is erotica. The whole of the plot is about the sexual events of a world ruled by a BDSM empire, who enslaves people at will for their sadistic sexual pleasure. There is no real love, no romance, and hardly any consent. They just are sexual slaves because they are given no other choice. Even those who are in the BDSM world have choices when it comes to their relationships and laisons. But not in this monstrosity.
Again, there is no action in this book that does not directly related to the sexual slavery and BDSM. The frame of the story is that the prince of the great kingdom takes Beauty, not as his wife, but as his sex slave. Everything else is just pain and fucking. If there was any story line that did not revolve around sex and pain being pleasure, then perhaps this book would have some redeeming value. But there isn't, and it has none.

So, if you are into, or are curious about, sexual slavery with BDSM then I recommend this book for your reading pleasure.

If you would like to read a good story, that has romance or some well written and relevant sex, then this is NOT the book for you (save your swapping points for something better).

I love Anne Rice. I loved her Queen of the Damned and the Mayfair witches books in particular. She's a good author with great books. If I'd been her I would NEVER have admitted to being the author of this book. The plot was just the stupidest piece of nonsense I've heard and not believable. The writing was deplorable and I can't believe Anne Rice really wrote this! Ick Ick Ick !

Read 'Exit to Eden' before you read this book. The majority of it is similar to what takes place at 'the club'. If Exit to Eden is too hard core for you, then you do not want to read the Beauty books.
I'm not really sure I would classify this book as erotic. Sexual and violent and even brutal with extreme subservience.

Anne Rice writing as A.N. Roquelare. Quite erotic take on the fairy tale of "Sleeping Beauty".

If you like master&slave, rape, bondage, homosexuality, and spankings all in one then this book is for you. Personally I thought it was bad. I only continued to read in hopes of a better story line. The only reason this book sold was because of Anne Rice's pervious success. I understand why she would want to write it under a fake name. I give it a big thumbs down.

Very easy to read, but it really is closer to written pornography than it is to erotica. It has a lot of action, but the plot is a bit too simple for my tastes, as it is only written from one point of view(Beauty's). As the trilogy progresses, the plot gets better because she adds points of view from some of the other characters in the story.
Overall, it is a very interesting trilogy, but the first book is a bit too simple for me.

I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised by this book...I expected it to be raunchy like DeSade but it isn't...Men and women alike run the gauntlet of escapades...However, this is not for the faint of heart...This is not a book for anyone without an open mind...You don't have to live the lifestyle that is depicted in the book to enjoy reading it...Chalk it up for a guilty pleasure read...Take it with a grain of salt...I am not giving it 5 stars because there were times I felt she could have revved it up a notch or two...JMO...

In the tradional folk tale of " Sleeping Beauty", the spell cast upon the lovely young princess and everyone in her castle can only be broken by the kiss of a Prince. It is an ancient story , one that originally emerged from and still deeply disturbs the mind's unconscious. Now Anne Rice's retelling of the Beauty story probes the unspoken implications of this lush , suggestive tale by exploring its undeniable connection to sexual desire. Here the Prince awakens Beauty, not with a kiss, but with sexual initiation. His reward for ending the hundred years of enchantment is Beauty's complete and total enslavement to him... as Anne Rice explore the world of erotic yearning and fantasy in a classic that becomes , with her skillful pen, a compelling experience. I read this series because I heard it was the "original" 50 Shades of Gray, and I like Ann Rice's vampire books. I must say this is nothing like 50 Shades of Gray. There is no love story to carry you through the books, and no real redemption. I don't understand what Rice was trying to convey with this version of a BDSM story but it isn't anything that I enjoyed. The only redeeming factor is that Beauty ends up with a happy ending.

If you are into mindless SM/Bondage you might like this book. After the first few pages, there was no connection or relationship to the Sleeping Beauty story. Otherwise, it was a typical story of this genre and could have been written by anyone with a lurid imagination and twisted sexual fantasies. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. If you are into this sort of thing, then you might enjoy it. Otherwise, pass it by.

I really expected more from this book based on the positive reviews I read. I am very open minded when it comes sexuality, but what I found in this book here was more humilation and spanking than anything else.

As stated by other reviewers, some of what is written as punishment would indeed injure, maim or kill a person. Not to mention the techniques used to attract flies and other insects to a person's nether regions.... ugh!

The story just drones on and on and to me is just not enticing at all.

Give me some good BDSM on fanfiction over this anytime.

I have owned this book for at least 15 years and never got around to reading until this summer. I really enjoy erotic fiction and I must say, I found this book disappointing. I had trouble with the "why" of the story. As I read the book I was hoping to get an understanding of the motivation of the characters, but it seemed Beauty and the others were punished just for sake of punishment. In my mind, there was not much erotic about the story.

This book is S&M porn. If that's your thing, then you'll like it, but if not, be aware. I thought it was going to be a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story, not plotless spanking porn, so I was a little disappointed.

Wow I can't believe this is actually considered to be a well written book. The writing is terrible, the actual story itself lacks...everything. I was bored out of my mind. I read as far as I could go until I realized that this book was going anywhere. Needless, to say I do not recommend this book. Not even to those who enjoy BDMS!

I have only just read the first book in the series, but I must agree with previous reviews. Spanking, spanking, spanking, and more spanking.....really, is so much necessary? I am not well-versed in BDSMology, but the Queen's castle seems like an institution of torture where the inmates become indoctrinated whether they like it or not. 'Act like you enjoy me beating the crap out of you or I will hang you up like meat and poke you with stuff'.....regardless, I will finish the series and see where Anne takes me with this....to be continued...

I may be alone in this oppinion, but I felt this book tappered off to boring. Started out interesting and erotic, but eventually the novelty of the ideas wore off and there was nothing new to keep me interested.

The plot is barely worth describing. Basically the Prince awakens Beauty and takes her as his slave. She is not allowed to wear cloths and must crawl around on her hands and knees and she is punished quite frequently and pretty much always in the same way. As I said, the shock value really wheres off about a hundred pages in. Anyway, it turns out that in this kingdom, such practices are extremely common (hundreds of similar slaves are kept in the court) which aslo lead me to wonder why no one there gets bored of it. But it's probably best not to question the logic of erotica.

The good things about this book were that it was a quick, simple read. Some parts were sort of hot, especially in the beginning. But seriously, it needs a lot more variety. If you can suspend disbelief and your into this sort of thing, I'd recommend it.

This book is not a typical Ann Rice book. It states that it is erotic but there is a definite Ds trend to this book. Just be aware when you request this book or know that it the right thing for you if that is what you are looking for.

Personally, I've read much more shocking material than this and am surprised there are so many people who are disturbed by semi hard bdsm and a little anal male on male play(if this shocks you wait for the bestiality scenes in books 2 and 3). I found the next two in the series more stimulating, however this one was decent. The only complaint I have is that I would have preferred more scenes from the sadistic dominating point of view than the masochistic conquered. Also theres some good Bi play scenes, but it kinda makes me wish for more.
