Difficult reading with stream of consciousness writing at times and late identification of characters. The novel deals with all the big ideas - the universe, physics, God, religion, evil (especially the holocaust).
While some might consider this book as "brilliant", I believe many others would find it confusing and muddled. I would suggest reading a synopsis BEFORE tackling the text.

Enjoyed the thought provoking collection of different characters' experiences and beliefs. Dense and complex plot that changes direction frequently from different perspectives and time lines.
Not as engrossing as Doctorow's previous works. For those who like the enmeshing of religion and the evolving prose of Doctorow's style, maybe worth a read. But this book is nowhere as engrossing as Doctorow's "Billy Bathgate," and I would wholly recommend that book over this one. Characters in this book are not as riveting or seem as fully fleshed out.
