This is Book 3 of the Rain Wilds Chronicles.

Fortunately, this book provides the reader with a much-needed change of scenery as we exchange the plodding monotony of travel upriver to the landlocked struggles of life in the ruined farms. The dragons are still flightless and living on the land like cattle, and Kelsingra is a goal both perfectly visible and completely out of reach.

This was a good transition book that serves as the necessary bridge between the first two books and the fourth. The dynamics of the characters continue to change, which is what makes these stories so good in the first place. This is the book where all of the moving pieces in the plot begin to line up, and the building suspense continues to draw you in.

At this point in the story, the reader has become very comfortable with the characters, just as the characters have become more comfortable with who they are (and who they are becoming) as well. In that sense I felt like the series had finally found is rhythm and from that point on it was only a matter of enjoying the ride.
