I've accidentally started reading this author's Harry Bosch series in reverse order -- the first one I read was about Harry returning to the police force after retirement. This one ends with his retirement. I definitely want to read/hear the rest of them -- good plots, likeable characters, and decent mystery denouements. Very satisfying reads.

As usual, Harry Bosch is a fascinating enigma; Michael Connelly is a master at the police procedural. It is New Years Day and a dog finds a bone in the Hollywood Hills. The dogs owner, a physician, knows the bone is human a 10 to 12 year-old boy.

Thus begins an intriguing case that makes lots of hard turns. The murder occurred 20 to 25 years before and the victim was brutalized on a regular basis.

The case is fascinating, Harrys love interest and their relationship is not. Julia, a boot, is a mature woman who went through the police academy months earlier.

As sharp as Harry is, he begins a relationship with her rather quickly even though it is against LAPDs policy for a supervisor and new recruit to be romantically involved. I just didnt feel that the relationship was real; the interactions seemed wooden.

One of the things that I like about Michael Connelly is that he isnt afraid to take chances with his main character, Harry. The case provides one surprise after another but the ending was a shocker.

This was one of tirst Michael Connelly books that I read and he sucked me right in. I am usually the type of person that needs to read the books of a series in order but I don't feel it is necessary with this author. Each of his books tell enough about him and even though the author layers his charachter with each book I don't feel like I am missing anything skipping around. Also I have become such an addict that I will read whatever comes first from PBS/ My favorite book though is still Black Hole where he goes into Harry Bosch's experiences as a tunnel rat in Vietnam....nuther book. Anyways. I am glad this author is so prolific as it will keep me happy for at least another year or so.
