Beautifully written, wonderful characters, moody, broody and gripping right to the end. James Lee Burke is one of America's premiere mystery writers. An Edgar Award winner and one of my top three living American authors.
I just recently discovered Burke. He moved immediately into my top 10 authors. His books are a combination of winning characters and settings, great plots, and a combination of violence and near poetry. I rank this as a five star book, something that I don't think I've done since I jointed PBS. After many successes with books set in Louisana, this is the start of a new series further west (in this case, Texas). Billy Bob Holland is as compelling a protagonist as Dave Robicheaux in the earlier novels.
