Christopher Lowell wouldn't be my favorite designer since I find his style to be too much (tchotchke overload)!
However, this book will likely help you create that environment that your really wanted - tchtchkes or not. Mr. Lowell gives very practical advice such has painting the ceiling a color one to two shades lighter than the wall color rather than white and NOT falling in love with the patterned couch if you desire a longer lasting anchor piece for your room.
I found his tips easy to edit to my personal tastes and would recommend this book to pick up some basics decorating tips for your rooms.
