Not a typical Regency at all, which is one of the reasons I loved it. But don't get me wrong... Regencies are my favorite genre; it's just quite difficult to find brilliantly written ones with very different characters. Mary Balogh surpasses herself with this one: the hero and heroine are much older than in typical Regencies--both are 36--and Lady Helena Stapleton is as independent and flawed as she is beautiful. These two are seen in other Balogh books as minor characters: The Famous Heroine and A Precious Jewel are two where they're prominant. A very different story, certainly not all lightness and fluff. A book you won't soon forget. Brilliant.

Its nice how this book ties in a lot of the characters from her previous regency books. And these two characters are so original. The dialog between them is sharp. Well worth the read!

Mary Balogh is able to write so well, that the stories rise above the genre of Regency tales. Well worth the read, then pass it on. :)

I love to read Mary Balogh's stories. When you read, you feel the story as opposed to watching the story unfold. This book is a prime example. You immediately feel Helena's pain and Edgar's reluctance at being in the "ton". Edgar is a lawyer and makes money in trade. Helena is a widow who is atoning for her perceived past sins which you don't discover until close to the end of the book. Hope you will enjoy it, too!
