Having read a couple later books, I was happy to read the first in the series. It's set in small-town Minnesota which is refreshing. I loved this book and was finished in a day and a half, it was a quick and easy read. At first I didn't think I was going to enjoy reading this book, it seemed like a cheesy who done it mystery in the beginning. I was trying out the library borrowing via download onto the kindle and figured I might as well read the book after figuring out how to download it.
I am very glad I downloaded this book and stuck through the first two chapters. I became sucked in to trying to figure out the mystery as well as craved cookies after the first few recipes. Hannah's pushy mother Delores was irritating most of the time trying to play match maker to her eldest daughter Hannah.
The only thing that was obviously wrong about the book was the fact that Hannah's brother-in-law Bill the detective was allowing Hannah to question people and become part of helping to locate who the murderer was. No detective in their right mind would allow someone, let alone a family member go around asking questions to help figure out the identity of the killer. Despite that, the book latched on to my attention and I didn't want to put it down. I went to bed late one night and got up early before my 9 1/2 month hold to get some reading in. I can't wait to read the next book. So many books, so little time!

This looked like a series I would like so I actually started with the first in the series! By using the website Fantastic Fiction, I was led to the series of Hannah Swensen, cookie baker/store owner. Hannah lives in a small town of about 300 people in Minnesota. During tourist season, it about 4 times that size but after Labor Day, it is just the "regulars". Hannah owns and operates The Cookie Jar where the only sold other than cookies is coffee and tea. On her way to open the store, she notices a few unusual things but the worst is walking back to her vehicle seeing the driver for Cozy Cow Dairy shot to death in his delivery truck. Her brother-in-law, Bill, the local sheriff's detective asks her to help him figure out why Ron (the driver) was shot. In doing so, Hannah learns more than she ever wanted to know about Lake Eden's residents. Then she and her sister, Andrea, discover the body of the owner of Cozy Cow and all the citizens wonder if some maniac has chosen their little town to go on a killing spree. The book is full of surprises and twists, a bit of romance here and there and a shocking end. To make it even better, Ms. Fluke includes some yummy cookie recipes too! I am looking forward to reading all of this series. :)

Hannah Swensen owns The Cookie Jar, a small coffee house and bakery in Lake Eden, Minnesota. Life in this small town is good, until Hannah finds Ron LaSalle, the delivery man for Cozy Cow Dairy, murdered in the alley behind the bakery. As Hannah discusses the murder with her brother-in-law, Deputy Sheriff Bill Todd, he asks her to help him uncover the killer.
This is the first book in the Hannah Swensen series. I liked Hannah and her determination to help her brother solve this mystery, but I did find it strange that he would ask her to help. I don't think the police would want a civilian interviewing suspects. But, it did move the story forward and put Hannah into the thick of the whodunit.
This mystery had loads of suspects with a couple red herrings. I eliminated some suspects only to add them back to the list later. I'm looking forward to more of this series. My rating: 3.5 Stars.

I keep plugging away at these books, have no idea why. The writing is horrible, in my opinion, and the main characters get on my nerves so bad I can hardly stand to read about them.
