China Dolls by Lisa See brings to life San Francisco in the 1930s and the 1940s and the Oriental community through World War II. It is the story of Grace, Helen, and Ruby, three young women whose friendship forms around the Forbidden City nightclub in San Francisco. The story and characterization in the book is lacking, but the history is fascinating.
