This is a book from a series. I had not read the earlier books in the series. I believe that is why I had to rate it so low. The author spends far too much time trying to catch the reader up on the back story and doesn't get into the real page-turning events until halfway through the book.
Also, much of the emotional impact revolves around the detective Kate Martinelli's relationship with her lover who is absent for most of the action in this book. Thus, her character isn't developed well enough in the back story to get an idea of why the reader should care about the relationship or to understand why it's having such an impact on Kate.
The writing style was undecisive, jumping from point of view to omniscient and then to another point of view. Confusing and annoying.
All that said, the story itself was good. I suspect fans of the series will get more out of it than I did.
