Madison Reynolds returned home to central Texas and Granny Bert after her husband died. She has a pair of twins, Blake and Bethani. Blake has adjusted to the move and new high school, while Bethani has not. She's pining for her friends in Dallas.
On the first day of her new job, Madison finds her employer dead and being picked over by his chickens in one of the chicken houses. That is when she again meets her old high school heartthrob, Brash deCordova, who is now the police chief.
Madison has opened a temporary employment business and can earn some money. With free rent (at Granny Bert's) and some employment, Madison keeps her family's head above water. However, strange things happen when she takes $1000 from a mother who wants her son released from jail for the murder of Ronny Gleason (the chicken grower who died). This is an engaging story with lots of action and a resourceful heroine. Great reading.
