James Michener is one of the great authors of all times. One has to stay with it to get to the story in all of his books, but there is so much history tied in with the story.

Each of his books is a saga that is sooo worth your time. Living here on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake, he really maintains the flavor of this colorful area, with all of its characters and hardworking, ordinary citizens. As rewarding as his ALASKA, POLAND, AND HAWAII. Don't miss it!

Chesapeake is one of the best novels that James Michener wrote, IMO, and I have read ALL of his books.

It is haunting in a way of the countryside that only a country person can appreciate. Michener gives life not only to his human characters, but also to the animal life that populate this novel.

Michener's books for the most part are written on a grand scale as historical fiction. He gives the reader a portrait of how things might have been, not how things really were.

What can you say? It's James Michener. All his stuff his excellent. A wonderfully entertaining to get a good dose of American history. (Older book, but still in good reading condition.)

Michener, love him or hate him. He tells epic stories, really massive stories that cover a long period in time. He is a great story teller and easily takes the reader on a journey that spans that time.

I love his books, but I find if you are in the right frame of mind, the books stick with you long after you have read them.

Everyone should read at least one of his books

Michener's formula of tracing the history of a geographical area via its inhabitants through the centuries works well in this tale of the Chesapeake Bay area, from the day of the first European settlers through the late 20th century.

Escaping religious persecution in England in the early 1600s, young Edmund Steed flees his homeland in pursuit of freedom and the New World. After joining Captain John Smith on his courageous journey, Steed establishes a remarkable family whose lives parallel the formation of America. Through the extraordinary tale of one man's quest, Michener tells intertwining stories of family and national heritage, introducing us along the way to Quakers, slaves, abolitionists, pirates, planters, and famous politicians, all struggling through American history in the common pursuit of freedom.
