I'll start by saying I really enjoyed the author's previous novel, "The Readers of Brokenwheel Recommend". And, somewhere buried with the 400+ pages of this novel is an equally good book. But, this time around there seem to be long, drawn out paragraphs giving sermons or geological explanations, or just somewhat extraneous thoughts. The characters are somewhat interesting but they seemed to be held at arms length. I could give a shadowy comparison to "The Lovely Bones" in that the narrator is a ghost floating around her town, trying to make sense of and resolve issues of those left behind. There is conflict between religious groups vs the LGBT community although, not strictly against them , more against what they think the motel in the title represents. There is, yet isn't resolution at the end of the book.
To be perfectly honest, this is a book that had I gotten through PBS or bought used I probably would have never finished. But, because of how much I liked her other book and the fact I bought it new I felt some compulsion to complete it.
