I really enjoyed this fourth installment of the Hawkenlye Mysteries! Abbess Helewise takes a periolous journey to the northeastern part of England to learn the truth about an unruly young nun who has joined Hawkenlye Abbey. Alba, the young nun, has brought along her two younger sistersand has woven a pack of lies regarding their past. Sir Josse d'Acquin spends the first part of the book recovering in the Abbey's Infirmary from a severe case of blood poisoning, but recovers enough to aid Helewise in learning the truth about Alba and her sisters.

This is one of my favorite medieval mystery series, featuring interesting characters and an interesting historical setting.

#4 Abbess Helewise/Sir Josse d'Acquin medieval mystery set at Hawkenlye Abbey in the 1190's. Sir Josse is deathly ill from an infected wound and lies in a fever at the Abbey while Abbess Helewise journeys to Ely to find out more information about a self-professed Sister who showed up at Hawkenlye with her two young orphaned sisters in tow. She doesn't seem much like a nun, and when one of Alba's sisters disappears and a pilgrim to the Shrine is found with his head bashed in, the Abbess needs answers. Enjoyable as always.

I love mysteries that include historical color that better help me understand that time's sociology. This series does not disappoint. Abbess Helewise usually teams up with nobleman, Josse d'Acquin, but now he is in her infirmary at death's door. When a body is found and one of the two sisters of a new, troublesome nun goes missing, the Abbess takes matters into her own hands. A light, but delightful read.
