This was an intriguing story, mainly of the French Resistance during the war. I didn't give it 5 stars because it has been done many times before and was a little too heavy on religion for my taste.
The main characters were strong women, especially Gisele while the Nazis were living in her home as she was forced to be their caretaker. She was hiding a child of a Jewish friend by pretending it was her daughter while her beloved brother Michel and many Resistance fighters hid in the tunnels below the Chateau with her help.
Present day Chloe adored her grandmother Gisele, who never would talk about the war. Chloe was shocked to find all the secrets her family hid from her as she traveled to France and the Chateau on behalf of her grandmother, to find out what happened to a girl named Adeline. She met Riley who was going to do a film documentary of the Jewish men who fought for the Nazis and their shocking past unraveled as she finally understood the history of her family.
I was shocked when I read how many Jewish men were in the Nazi Army, thinking it will save their loved ones. Of course, that never happened.
The plot was loosely based on a noblewomen raised in a Chateau; the tunnels no longer accessible, but her stories lived on.
This book is definitely worth reading,
