With his unruly red hair and solid, honest face, Rafe doesn't think he has a chance with the flirtatious beauty who seems not to notice him. And when scandal threatens to ruin the reputation of a friend's sister, Breanna, Rafe's hopes may be dashed for good. To stop malicious tongue-wagging, Rafe offers to marry the exotic, raven-haired beauty. It isn't only honor, though, that sparks the proposal, for a smoldering attraction draws him to this spirited woman as well.
Little does Rafe know, however, that Annabelle still wants him for her own. While he's a master at outwitting opponents on the battlefield, the painfully shy soldier is defenseless when it comes to the fairer sex -- and Annabelle will use every weapon she can, while Breanna hopes for his attention too. Now Fate has the chance to find true love -- but only if he doesn't lose his head....
I became intrigued with Rafe in the Cad and was looking forward to reading his story and was not disappointed. Rafe is not your typical silver tongued, handsome rake. He is not a duke, earl, just a retired army captain who is an unwanted 2nd son. He does not dwell on this though. He wants a wife and a family. His Brenna is not his first choice but as a man of honor when through no fault of either one, he is accused of ruining her reputation. He marries her and discovers that she is really his first choice. Brenna is an independent daughter of a soldier, who lost one fiance to death and another who left her another. Both characters are well drawn and you care about what happens to them.
