Cecilia: Memoirs of an Heiress (Oxford World's Classics (Paperback))
Cecilia Memoirs of an Heiress - Oxford World's Classics Paperback
Author: Frances Burney
Cecilia is an heiress, but she can only keep her fortune if her husband will consent to take her surname. Fanny Burney's unusual love story and deft social satire was much admired on its first publication in 1782 for its subtle interweaving of comedy, humanity and social analysis.

Author has clever wit and keen intelligence. Characters are well developed, though not all lovable. Rather Dickens like in terms of plot. Deserves to be read for the beautiful writing and the insight into the class system of England during the late 1700s.

This book is somewhat tiresome and Evelina is much better. However, I have known many people who like it a good deal, and Jane Austen supposedly got the title of "Pride and Prejudice" from its pages. Try it if you have patience. Fanny Burney herself was a fascinating woman.
