Castaways was a quick, fun read. I recommend reading it. I like Keene but his books don't have the suspense and thrill I like to get from books. Especially horror books. I keep on reading him though. The reference to current pop culture in this book make it fun. When I first read the book description I thought "Ugh, what a cheese bag rip off of the current show." I expected it to be very cheesy. Keene manages to avoid the cheese while capturing the "reality" of "reality" TV in a work that is not real :-) Hmm...I think I just managed to really cheese up my own review. Ah well. Pick it up if for nothing more than a book that is easy to read while commuting, waiting in the doctors office or when you are avoiding sex with your SO. :-)

This was my first Brian Keene and won't be my last! If you are a reader of the true 'horror' story then get this one. Written in the style of Richard Laymon and in the early writing of Dean Koontz Castaways takes you to an unhabitated island for a reality show BUT the worst could never happen to anyone like it did to these people just wanting to survive the shows challenges. Very graphic descriptions so if you can't handle the horror then pass it on.

The story is about a TV reality show obviously based on CBS Survivor. It reminds me of a Jack Ketchum or Richard Laymon story, with good reason. Brian Keene is a big Richard Laymon fan and this book is a tribute to him. The creatures in this story are based on Laymons creatures in Cellar house that were brought here from this Island many years ago.
If you like Richard Laymon you'll enjoy this book for sure.

This book was awesome if you like Richard Laymon.....sort of a beast house beginning with a SURVIVAL twist......LOVED this book........If you remember the Laymon beast house books you know the beast was brought back from an unhabited Island.......Guess what????you are on that Island...I think...

Brian Keene is always an entertaining writer with great details that help you feel like you are in the story with the characters. That being said, I found the constant repetition of the description of the creatures a bit annoying, but overall, I enjoyed this gorefest. Fast-paced and engrossing!

Excellent read! If you like suspense and a bit of horror mixed in with lots of blood you will like this one. An island full of people being terrorized and chased by freaky creatures!!
