Caribbean Reef Fishes Author:John E. Randall The Caribbean area hs waited a long time for an authoritative book on its reef fishes. The clear tranquil waters abound in fishes ranging from the beautiful to the bizarre which are so captivating that even the casual observer may wish toknow their names and something of their natural history. Many of the more dedicated skin divers have become "... more »fish watchers," displaying the same zeal as their bird-watching counterparts on land. Requests by such persons for a suitable guide to the fishes of the region have been numerous.
This book has been written primarily for the snorkeling and SCUBA-diving set, the aquarist, and the fisherman. Professional marine biologists will also find it useful.
Formal accounts are given of the 300 species most likely to be observed by man in the sea or caught by man near shore. Mention is made in the book of more than 100 other fishes, usually with sufficient information to permit their identification as well. The 300 species are all illustrated, more than half in color, mostly from photographs taken by the author. Dr. Randall collected most of the fishes himself. Some were taken while aqua-lunging to depths as great as 200 feet.
A majority of the fishes discussed are broadly distributed from southern Florida and the Bahamas to Brazil; consequently the book will be helpful to persons interested in shore fishes throughout the tropical western Atlantic.« less
