Book one of an eight book series about the Owl Gaurdians of GaHoole. Although fiction there is a great deal of information about different kinds of owls. The author has a great imagination! Suitable for Young Adult readers.

Great series my 11 yr old son loves them and I have to admit I do as well. Very well written with a lot of real info about owls.

In true fantasy fashion, Lasky has spun a tale that is simple enough for young readers to grasp, yet intricate enough to not belittle them. As an adult, I found that there is plenty to keep me engaged, and I look forward to the next book. I think parents will approve of the message, as good morals are taught, friendship is rewarded, and respect for elders, traditions, and ingenuity win the day, or night, as the case is! Well written, carefully crafted, and exciting word usage helps with the flow of the tale. It seems obvious that she did a great deal of study of owls, and has inspired me to do so, as well! I am off to find out about "Elf Owls," so happy reading.

My 9 year old (at the time) and I read this book together for a homeschool book group we belonged to. It was wonderful. A very intriguing story line with lots of fascinating details about owls. It was one of the few books we found that was equally popular among boys, girls, and parents.

A wonderful Intersesting book that pre-teens will enjoy

An excellent book, with adventure, intrigue and suspense. We really enjoyed this book. It is great for 3rd grade and up; also a great read aloud for younger kids.
This is the book that started it all, the first book of the Guardians of Ga'hoole; a quest novel, a growing-up novel, a mystery novel. Imaginative and intriguing, just right for YA reading. As an additional bonus, the author also displays considerable knowledge of actual owl habits and natural history.
From back cover: Soren is born in the forest of Tyto, a tranquil kingdom where the Barn Owls dwell. But evil lurks in the owl world, evil that threatens to shatter Tyto's peace and change the course of Soren's life forever.
Soren is captured and taken to a dark and forbidding canyon. It's called an orphanage, but Soren believes it's something far worse. He and his friend Gylfie know that the only way out is up. To escape, they will need to do something they have never done before--fly.
And so begins a magical journey. Along the way, Soren and Gylfie meet Twilight and Digger. The four owls band together to seek the truth and protect the owl world from unimaginable danger.

Born in the peaceful forest of Tyto, Soren the barn owl looks forward to a life of eating bugs and learning to fly, but evil forces have another plan for the owls.
When Soren is captured and taken to a mysterious place known as St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls, he discovers the orphanage has a darker purpose. With the help of his friend, Gylfie, they set out to uncover the truth and find a way to escape.
Unfortunately, the only way out is up, and the young owls will have to learn to fly if they have a hope of escape.
I first read THE CAPTURE many years ago and looked forward to reacquainting myself with the world of the owls. This tale of suspense and finding heroes in unlikely places is full of struggles and triumphs that are easy to relate to, even though the main characters are birds. Re-reading it made me want to get my hands on the other books in the GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE series so I can continue reading Soren's story.

This book is a terrific book, I read the first and second and then I couldn't stop from reading the other books. I am almost done the third one "The Rescue" so far it is sooo good!!!!!!
My granddaughter has yet to put this book down before she finished it. It is a wonderful series and lets kids believe in something and themselves when it comes to the "hard stuff."
I read this book aloud to my three boys, ages 13, 11, and 10. They absolutely loved it and were chanting "another chapter, another chapter" almost every night. It was so easy to get caught up in Soren and Gylfie's struggles and we learned not only of their struggles, but we were also able to apply many lessons they learned to our own lives as we are struggling through some pretty big issues of our own.
Now we are reading the second book of the series aloud as well. We continue to love Soren and Gylfie, as well as Twilight and Digger. Great series of books!

I've never read it, but my daughter really like it.

I was surprised by how much evil existed in this story - kidnapping, cannibalism, death of parents, owls willingly drained by vampire bats, and an Orwellian 1984-like orphanage where names are replaced with numbers. My kids are excited to see the movie, and my ahead of grade level in reading seven year old read and enjoyed the book before I knew all the details. I'm torn about whether it's a good way for kids to learn about real problems or too much too soon. (I think it is aimed at the upper elementary grades.) It is a page turner, but I'm unsettled by the open ended ending. I guess in a 15 book series I should have known there wouldn't be closure in book one! I do like the heroic believe in yourself stance and the variety of good guys (a snake, eagles, a young owl with an amazing vocabulary, and a tough old "from the streets" type owl) working together.
