60% above average writing, 40% overblown melodrama. It's a shame, really. This had the potential to be really great, but the prose is so eye-rollingly over the top corny, I could barely read most of it with a straight face. A tortured hero with a martyr complex meets a doormat heroine, and love miraculously, incredibly, conspicuously, conquers ALL. It has some very well-written moments, but there's just not enough substance there to overcome the silly, melodramatic prose.

Charis and Gideon, two lost in personal catastrophe, oddly find comfort with each other in a daring escape, if only Gideon can save Charis from a certain unhappy betrothal, violent step brothers, and a life without passion and love. Little did they know that Charis would be his savior in the end. This is a sweet love story that shows love can conquer personal tragedy and nightmares. I love how it starts out as Gideon is the protector of Charis and wants resolve her of her captors and criminal brothers, but it turns out that Charis must save this spy hero from his own inner demons. My favorite line I think is that Charis sees Gideon as her "pirate of passion"...given his family history it was all too well placed. This was fun romantic read.

this is a good read, full of drama. but i have to admit that i thought there was alittle too much drama about "shame" over the past. but i like the concept for the book that he suffers an afliction where he cant bear to touch another person for any reason even a simple handshake thru gloves and yet he over comes it in order to please her

3 1/2 almost 4 stars, and really I think its just a personal preference that I don't like such long romance books. There was definitely alot of descriptiveness that could have been cut out although it did paint a very vivid picture and you knew exactly what the people and surroundings looked like as surely as if you were reading an actual picture book.
I liked both characters; a beautiful and strong woman who is alone and on the run from ruthless stepbrothers who have beat her and held her prisoner. And a handsome (although physically and emotionally scarred) man who has developed an affliction where he can't bear human touch; developed from being imprisoned in India.
It was a very interesting and suspenseful book, but like I said I did skim over a few parts that weren't in my opinion incredibly important. I also picked this book from a forum discussing "books where the hero helps/takes care of an injured/ill etc heroine" since I do like those particular types of romances and I thought more time could have been spent on that since it was an interesting premise and she was such a strong person untrusting of anyone after how she was treated.
