From inside book: Like Captain Bill, many sailors have had African ancestors - Paul Cuffe, Absalom Boston, Captain Michael Healey.
But I don't think any of those historical sailors had quite so interesting an adventure as Captain Bill Pinckney I am so glad hedecided to write this book for elementary school age children. Otherwise I, an adult, would have missed out on knowing about this special American who decided as a child he would circum-navigate the world and as an adult did so. In this beautiful picture book the reader gets an insight into not only a great sailing adventure but also maps and charts, radios, living on board, sea life, geography, people and animals, mathematics, weather and the special friendship Pinckney had with the children of Boston.
