Skye Crawford quits her job with a nonprofit organization in Chicago and considers a surprising offer from her ex-fiance: he asks her to join his campaign for Congress as a PR consultant. He is running as a Democrat against a popular Republican incumbent. Skye isn't really that interested, but he says he's got dirt on his opponent that will blow him out of the race, so she agrees to meet her ex in Washington, D.C., only to discover that he has committed suicide, or, rather, it's supposed to look as though he did. Determined to find out what really happened, Skye meets Congressman Darren Birch, a black conservative who is charming, good-looking, and seemingly honest. Darren and Skye are very attracted to each other, but Skye can't dismiss evidence that points to his involvement in nefarious deeds. By the time she finally decides to believe in him, it's almost too late. Winters' latest winning romance is filled with politics, scandal, and intrigue, making for a compelling read.
